Solid Waste Division: Garbage, Recycling, Yard Waste
The Solid Waste Division proudly serves the City of Deltona residents by providing them with programs and services that effectively and efficiently manage municipal solid waste generated within the City of Deltona.
Garbage Collection: The City of Deltona contracts with Waste Pro to provide residential collection of solid waste. Residents are provided a 96-gallon cart for the once per week collection of household garbage. Often times Waste Pro utilizes an automated curbside collection process. It is important that resident make sure access to carts are not blocked by vehicles, mailboxes, objects or overhanging tree limbs. The carts should be placed within four feet of the curb and the lid opening should face the street with the wheels facing your home. Your cart should be at the curb prior to 6 a.m. on collection day. Collection is from Monday through Friday of each week. Check the map to find which day is your designated collection day. Household garbage includes food scraps, packaging, clothes, small appliances, and other non-recyclables. To keep our streets clean, try not to leave loose items in your curt but put everything in bags within the cart. Customers may use their own container but
they cannot exceed a capacity of 45 gallons and they must have side bail handles and not weigh more than 60 lbs. In addition to their cart, residents are also allowed to put out one, 32-gallon can or bag per collection day. After collection, carts must be removed from the front yard the same evening as collection day. Residential garbage, recycling and yard waste containers must not be visible on the front facade of a residential property except for collection day.
Recycling: Recycling at home is easy and can be accomplished simply by placing all recyclable items in the Waste Pro provided recycle bin. New products are manufactured from recycled materials instead of virgin materials which lessens or dependence on limited natural resources. When we recycle, we prevent reusable materials from ending up in a landfill where they become contaminated and cannot be extracted. Waste Pro recycles glass bottles, newspapers, magazines, office paper, aluminum, steel cans, plastic bags, phonebooks, junk mail, cardboard, cereal boxes without wax liners, and plastics (coded with numbers 1-7). Large cardboard boxes should be flattened to fit in the bin. Containers that held automotive, pool or toxic
chemicals cannot be recycled. Residential recycling is collected once a week on the same say as residential garbage collection. Residents should place their recycling bins near the curb prior to 6 a.m. the day of their pickup.
Yard Waste: Yard waste or brush collection includes grass, leaves, shrubs, weeds and tree trimmings. Yard waste piles must be manageable. Waste Pro will pick up an average of four 32-gallon, three 45-gallon containers or eight plastic bags per house, not to exceed eight cubic yards in a 4-week period. None of the containers can weigh more than 60 pounds. Your Waste Pro garbage bin may also be used for yard waste following your solid waste collection day. Palm fronds may be neatly stacked and
placed at the curb. Limbs should not be longer than 4 feet in length and 6 inches in diameter and should be bundled. Bundles should not weigh more than 60 pounds. and shall not be required to be bundled. Your residential yard waste will be mulched at the landfill for reuse. Please do not mix other waste material in with yard waste. Residents should place their yard waste near the curb prior to 6 a.m. the day of their pickup. Check the map to find which day is your designated yard waste collection day.
Bulky Item Collection: Residents with large household items for collection should call Waste Pro to schedule a pickup and find out if additional collection fees may be necessary. If the item is re-usable, please consider calling a charitable organization. Residents that throw huge piles of household goods in the right-of-way are in violation of City ordinances and may be subjected to solid waste fines.
Construction Materials—Commercial, construction or demolition debris, such as fencing, floor tiles, etc. are not included in the City's solid waste collection services. However, residents may contract directly with Waste Pro for an additional pick up per month.
Tires: Deltona residents may place up to four typical automotive size tires at the roadside for pickup on their regular household garbage pick-up day.
Motor Oil: The State of Florida does not permit motor oil in any landfill. Do not put motor oil in with your garbage. Auto parts stores such as Advance Auto Parts and Autozone have collection sites for disposal of used motor oil. Please call Volusia County Recycles, (386) 943-7889, to locate a nearby facility.
Lead Acid Batteries: The State of Florida does not permit the disposal of any automotive and lead acid batteries. Retail outlets where you purchase your new battery are required to accept and dispose of your old battery. Residents may also bring batteries to the West Volusia Transfer Station or to Recycling Buy Back centers for recycling. Please call Volusia County Recycles (386) 943-7889 for a facility near you.
Hazardous Materials: Household hazardous wastes are products toxic to the environment, potentially contaminating our water supply, and are common in your home or garage. These items should not be placed in your garbage. Typical household hazardous waste includes used motor oil, lead acid batteries, household batteries, pesticides, gasoline, paint thinners/solvents, and pool chemicals. Please take hazardous materials to the West Volusia Transfer Station located at 3151 East New York Ave., DeLand, The station is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays.
It is the duty of the Solid Waste Division to ensure that all solid-waste generated and accumulated within the City shall be collected, removed and disposed of properly. Our staff strives to maintain a high-quality community environment by helping residents find alternatives to achieve compliance with City standards, codes and ordinances. We provide services that facilitate voluntary citizen involvement and cooperation in maintaining the quality of life in the City of Deltona and eliminate nuisances.We work to ensure the public receives timely responses to complaints and will take formal enforcement action when necessary to ensure complaint resolution. If you do receive a violation notice we recommend you find out how to correct the problem and do so promptly to avoid fines and liens. Additional time may be granted to residents who can
