Emergency Medical Services Division

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division is responsible for providing basic and advanced level emergency medical care for persons suffering from medical, psychiatric or traumatic emergencies.  This is accomplished by Advanced Life Support (ALS) licensed fire engines and a non-transport licensed rescue unit staffed by Firefighter-Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and Firefighter-Paramedics 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Five first response units are strategically located throughout the city for rapid response to requests for service.  More than 75% of the department’s requests for service are medically related calls.

Firefighter-EMTs and Paramedics receive monthly in-service training to maintain their skills and learn of new techniques and innovations in the field of pre-hospital healthcare.  Additionally, patient care reports are reviewed on a random basis to assure the quality of care delivered and to identify future training needs.

Specialized programs offered by the Division include a Bicycle EMS team, Blood Pressure Screenings and Public Education.  The EMS Division is also responsible for community-based CPR, First Aid and Babysitter training programs.  Classes are offered monthly and can be arranged for church, scouting and other groups.
